Good news for victims of domestic abuse and human trafficking.
President Biden recently signed the Safe Connections Act of 2022 into law. With this, victims of such crimes now get new rights with their cell phone service.
Most importantly, the law mandates that carriers will allow these victims to have a separate service along with their dependents. This allows them to free their cell phone service from their abusers, especially if they are using a family plan.
The new law requires carriers to allow this request to be done remotely. They also need to comply within two days and not impose any fees.
Unfortunately, the bill also allows carriers to require these customers to provide documentation of abuse. This is something that the EFF objected to. The law is not yet in effect at this time since it is up to the FCC to make specific rules for the law to be implemented.
