In the first few years of the iPhone, Apple included an LCD panel on its displays. But when they decided to equip the iPhone X with an OLED display for the first time, it made a decision to continue this in future iterations. Soon enough, Apple reserved the LCD displays for its budget-priced iPhone SE devices.
Unfortunately, it’s been reported that after next year’s iPhone SE 4, Apple will no longer use LCD displays on their devices. The last devices to be supplied with an LCD panel could possibly be released in the first part of 2025.
One reason for the switch is because OLED panels produce better viewing angles, contrast, and higher brightness. These panels also do not need a backlight, which helps preserve battery life.
This change also means that Apple will no longer be getting Japan Display and Sharp as its LCD suppliers. These Japanese firms had been responsible for 70% of the displays that Apple used on its iPhones for 10 years.
Instead, Apple will be sourcing its OLED displays from BOE and LG Display for the iPhone SE 4. It previously mostly sourced its OLED panels from Samsung Display.
This is all we know about the iPhone SE 4 at this point.
