Almost a year ago, T-Mobile publicly expressed its intention to acquire Mint Mobile and its other brands. While the Un-carrier is still waiting for a decision, one MVNO has filed an objection to oppose the purchase.
In today’s report, Lyca Mobile filed an objection with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to block the proposed acquisition. In the US, Lyca Mobile uses T-Mobile’s network as an MVNO. But things have been rocky between the two companies for some time now.
In its recent filing, the MVNO shared that it is a direct competitor of Mint Mobile. But since it occupies a small space in the US wireless market, Lyca Mobile alleges that T-Mobile treats them differently. It pointed out that T-Mobile is making it a struggle to provide the basic functionalities that they are obligated to. Lyca Mobile alleged that T-Mo was doing this purposely so that Mint Mobile would be at an advantage.
If the acquisition is approved, Lyca Mobile fears that T-Mobile’s anti-competitive behavior will worsen.
In response, T-Mobile said that the MVNO was bringing up an unrelated contract issue.
We’ll have to wait for more updates from the FCC, which is currently evaluating the proposed $1.35 billion acquisition of Ka’ena Corporation.
