One of the most exciting new smartphones on the market is the LG G3. It is said to be the South Korean technology company’s absolute best smartphone to date and has a slew of great features. This latest flagship is bigger, has a better screen resolution and is even easier to use than its predecessor, the LG G2. What exactly does this monster have to offer eager consumers who are clamoring for a new phone? It is well worth taking a look.
One of the most noticeable aspects of the LG G3 is the improved screen resolution. In the latest flagship, LG utilizes the new quad HD technology that includes a resolution measuring a whopping 2560 by 1440 pixels. The display is extremely vivid and essentially tailor made for an individual who considers himself a power user. The screen is highly responsive and the battery life is quite decent.
As for the hardware, the LG G3 has just about everything an Android user could possibly want. It is powered by a 2.5GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and packs 3GB of RAM, meaning you can browse the web, stream your favorite music, watch videos, play high tech fast paced games and get all your work done right at your fingertips on the phone without fear of lag. The G3 includes 32GB of internal storage and a 13 megapixel camera that shoots quality images and doubles up as a video recorder. However, if you are not so much a power user, there is also the option of a 16GB version that packs only 2GB of RAM at a cheaper price tag.
With the G3, LG takes on a modern look, offering users smooth and subtle curves along the edges of the smartphone and a brushed metal finish that looks very classy. The screen measures in at 5.5 inches, which makes the phone look slightly larger than it is and borders around the phablet size although it is marketed as a flagship for the mainstream Android user. Of course, with a screen of 5.5 inches, the LG G3 is just slightly larger than the original Samsung Galaxy Note, which was considered huge at the time of its release while packing a 5.3 inch screen. While not considered a phablet per se, the G3 might be a bit awkward for users with smaller hands.
As is the case with last year’s G2, LG’s current flagship packs its three physical buttons at the back of the device. These can be located right under the camera lens. The main circular button is the home/wake button, while the other two will control the volume at which you set your LG G3. The latter is considerably more flush with the back of the device.
The brushed metal body of the G3 is pleasing to the eye and resembles real metal. However, it is actually plastic and feels like plastic. With that being said, you shouldn’t expect to feel cool, hard metal, but it is not a fingerprint magnet, which was a problem in last year’s G2. The front of the phone is essentially dominated by the screen and includes fairly narrow bezels with the exception of the bottom. The phone’s back is curved, making for a more natural feel while in the hand.
The LG G3 is considerably thin at 0.35 inches in depth and weighs only 149 grams, considerably lightweight given its size. It sports a micro SD card slot that accepts cards of up to 128GB for additional memory expansion, meaning you can store pretty much your entire music and video collection on it. The battery is 3000 mAh, removable, and should get the user through as much as 553 hours of standby time and as much as 21 hours of talk time.
The G3 runs on Android’s 4.4.2 KitKat operating system and includes LG’s simple user interface. In fact, LG’s marketing motto is “Simple is the new smart.” One of the easiest aspects is found in the camera. To capture a photo, all the user needs to do is point at their subject, tap on the screen and voile, the image is taken. The interface is generally flat and light and includes a standard Android home screen that features LG’s weather widget at the top. This can be removed to the user’s liking.
Smart Notice is a feature that is similar to Google Now but that focuses more on your usage of the smartphone. For instance, if you tend to call or receive calls from a specific number often, the phone will suggest that you add it to your contact list. Smart Tips includes a menu chock full of options such as the camera, Smart Notice and Knock Code. Each menu does nothing aside from opening a page with YouTube tutorial videos that are embedded.
One of the nicest new features is LG Health, which of course is LG’s version of health tracking. The built in app is surprisingly good and can give Samsung, with its S Health app that is found on the Galaxy S5. With it, you are able to track activities such as running, walking, hiking and more. The app uses a GPS based map to work and you can view statistics such as steps taken, calories burned and more.
The LG G3 boasts a new keyboard that is extremely good. It can be changed in height to your personal preference and promises you “no more typos.” Another great new feature in the keyboard is that it is intuitive to your texting habits, which means it will be able to determine whether you mean to hit a certain letter over another should you happen to accidentally hit the wrong one. Swype is of course included, although LG calls it “Path.”
The G3 has a quality camera, although its default user interface includes the barest of minimums. All that is required to snap a photo is to simply tap the screen. It is also possible to press the shutter button on the back of the smartphone to capture an image. There are only four camera modes found on the LG G3 – dual, auto, magic focus and panorama. This is to keep everything neat and simple.
Interestingly, there is a voice shutter feature in the G3’s camera. It will snap a photo when you say words such as “cheese,” “smile,” “whiskey,” “LG or even “kimchi.” This feature works with both the main rear-facing camera and the 2 megapixel front-facing camera, which is simply dubbed as the “selfie camera.” When you snap a photo with the front-facing camera, you will notice blue lines around the object of focus to alert you that it has been detected.
An interesting new feature that LG has included in the main camera of the G3 is an infrared laser focus system. This is an addition that has never been included on any other camera and interestingly, LG originally implemented it in its vacuum cleaners to prevent them from bumping into walls. This feature is said to crush the cameras on competing smartphones such as the HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 in terms of amount of time it takes to focus the camera.
The photos the LG G3 is capable of capturing are quite great in quality. However, it is not perfect. For instance, images shot in certain lighting situations may appear washed out. The camera tends to thrive in low light situations, producing low noise for good clarity. Flash is subpar on the front-facing shooter, although shooting videos should be quite satisfactory as you can shoot up to 4K.
The G3 performs exceptionally well and there is very little bloatware found on the phone. Scrolling through menus is a breeze, as is opening apps. However, the battery life is not the best, most likely due to the heavy duty screen, which is LCD and not AMOLED. Still, you should find yourself managing to eke out at least a good 10 hours of life with the LG G3.
