Ever since May 2019, the US has banned Huawei from selling its products in the country or even working with US companies. The reason for the ban is because the current administration deemed the Chinese smartphone and telecommunications equipment manufacturer as risky for their national security. But it looks like the ban is being extended to another year and will include another tech giant, ZTE.
This report comes after US President Donald Trump announced that these two Chinese tech giants will be banned from selling and working with US companies from “using telecommunications equipment made by firms posing a national security risk.”
Even with the first ban in place, Huawei continued to operate and be unaffected in Europe, Canada, and their other international markets. As a matter of fact, the company was able to ship 200 million smartphones last year. This is a 100% increase from their yearly shipments of around 100 million in 2017.
Since the ban was put in place, Huawei has started to develop its own app store called AppGallery. This is because they could no longer work with Google, which is an American business. As a result, Huawei smartphones did not have access to Google Services or even the Google Play app store.
We can only guess why Trump decided to extend the ban on both companies for another year.
