While Android's HTC One doesn't have the same speed as some of its newest competitors on the market, it's still one of the most advanced smartphones available for purchase today. However, the HTC One M8 was released earlier this year along with a larger screen, updated aesthetics, and improved camera capabilities. But don't let those updates fool you into thinking the HTC One is now obsolete.
As far as where the HTC One lacks since its launch is its processor. When it was first released, the Snapdragon 600 was considered top of the line as far as processor speeds go. Now, it is just outdated, due to the new use of the Snapdragon 800. This processor permits much quicker clock speeds and has an improved graphics card. While, this update may not be something you will recognize when sending a text message or receiving a call - it is much more obvious when playing games, downloading images or updating your apps.
The design, look and feel of the HTC One has yet to be successfully replicated by another Android company or by HTC themselves. No other phone feels the same in your hand like the HTC One - the build quality can't be matched. It's plated with aluminum on the outside and plastic on the inside, but it also has great sound quality due to its front facing speaker. The phone is available in 5 simple colors: glacial silver, stealth black, vivid or electric blue, glamour red and brilliant gold. Because there is some plastic in it's structure, there have been complaints about slight cracking to the phone; however not everyone can expect experience those same results.
Speaking specifically on it's build quality, it can be hard to maintain a "like-new condition" with the HTC One. Since it is plated with aluminum, a considerably soft metal, it is fairly effortless to scratch. And it's plastic counter-parts attract dirt easily. One pro and con is it's screen size. Coming in at 4.7", it's great for reading lengthy text, multi-tasking or playing games; but it can be hard to get used to. Most users will require two hands when controlling their phone (some taller men being the exception).
The HTC One is also shaped differently than most smartphones. In a way, it was built to hug your hand as you hold it while texting or up to your ear when talking on the phone. The bottom is curves up slightly, where it sits in your palm and the edges are bevelled in order to avoid any inflections. It has both an aggressive look and an elegant style; with that, it is definitely one of the most striking phones currently on the market. Each button - power (top), volume controls (left side) - and cameras/sensor (front and back) are strategically placed, so that no one will push any button without doing so with intention.
Despite its large screen size, this smartphone will still fit into your pocket due to its thin structure which measures in at only 9.3mm wide. On the front face of the phone, it has but only 2 navigation keys - one specifically for going back and the other for returning to your home screen. Both of these keys are accessible with the use of one hand and are back lit by a blue light when in use.
One factor to consider that the HTC One is missing is that of a memory card slot. Many smartphones have the option to add extra memory this way, however, the HTC One does not offer this function. Nor does this phone have a removable backplate to access the battery, rather it has a micro usb port at the base. This port is used for charging the battery, transferring data, and transmitting audio or video clips.
Obviously, Bluetooth, GPS, and HSPA connectivity come standard with this smartphone. But less popular, it also comes with NFC and an IR blaster. As we go deeper into the phone's software, you will notice there have been several updates since its launch. With the latest update, came a new app known as KeyVPN. This app allows you to connect to your work computer through your smartphone. Also, the BlinkFeed widget has been made optional - a frequent judgement by loyal HTC customers. The BlinkFeed holds everything from your social media updates, news stories, to popular RSS feeds. The current update moved to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean with the HTC Sense 5 UI. Sense underwent a complete redesign, including a monochrome BlinkFeed and clock widget for your home screen. Also, the apps are now organized 3 per row versus the usual 4. However, you do have the option to personalize this number and arrange how you want to set up your apps.
There were a lot of updates made to Kids Mode as well. Now when you switch to Kids Mode, the HTC One will automatically convert and lock itself into landscape screen mode. It will also arrange all approved apps and video clips in a way similar to a conveyor belt along the screen. Parents have the option to record stories using their voices and the accessibility of the front facing camera for the children, too. The downside to Kids Mode is that in order to unlock all of it's benefits, it will cost a few dollars a month. However, this could be worth it if you have any kids under the age of 10.
The HTC One specifications are as follows: it has a 1080 x 1920 megapixel resolution screen, 4.7 inch display, UltraPixel with HTC Zoe Camera, 2.1MP Full HD Recording Front Facing Camera, 9mm thick aluminum chassis, 1.7GHz quad core processor, 2300mAh battery, and Android 4.1 with HTC Sense 5.
Performance-wise, this phone can compete with the top-selling smartphones out on the market today. It's has the functionality of a tablet with the same capabilities as a phone. It's screen is perfect size for those who do a lot of email or work on away from the office or who have kids that love apps. It's also still practical enough to fit in the pocket of your jeans or purse. It looks professional in your hand, has great sound quality, and a professional interface design. If you're looking for a phone with all of those qualities and is still affordable, definitely consider the HTC One.
