South Korean phone makers Samsung and LG took the opportunity to introduce their respective flagship devices right around the time the Mobile World Congress kicked off this year in the city of Barcelona in Spain. Indeed, the former’s Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge smartphones and the latter’s LG G5 certainly did hog the limelight in the last few days. For HTC however, the Taiwanese phone maker does not appear to be making any noise at the world’s biggest tech conference for all things mobile. Or is it just biding its time?
As stated by Chialin Chang, the chief financial officer of HTC during an interview, the company does have plans to announce its next flagship device very soon. Chang has even expressed confidence that the phone maker’s latest handset will be able to distinguish itself from its competitors’ newest smartphone offerings through a key feature -- a significantly enhanced smartphone camera experience.
HTC has not fully divulged any details yet about its upcoming flagship device, but industry watchers are fully expecting the Taiwan based mobile manufacturer to formally introduce a new smartphone (most likely called the One M10) this year. The company however has been careful to date in not mentioning any official name for its next major smartphone release.
But if this soon to be launched handset will do have much improved camera specifications, it would mean that HTC has finally gotten around to doing something about the image capturing capabilities of its smartphone devices. Last year, the company’s One M9 smartphone debuted at the 2015 Mobile World Congress to generally positive reviews, but got flak for its rather disappointing camera specs. But now that HTC has addressed this particular shortcoming, will its next One smartphone finally be able to truly compete with Android giants such as Samsung and LG? It remains to be seen for now, but HTC is liking its chances.
But wait -- what exactly is keeping HTC busy at this year’s Mobile World Congress? The company is actually highlighting Vive, the virtual reality (VR) headset project it is developing in collaboration with game creator Valve. VR is a hot topic at this year’s event, and HTC is proud to say that it is right in the thick of things. The tech firm has announced the price of its system ($799), and has further revealed that it will start accepting advance orders on February 29th of this year.
