Apart from formally introducing its latest iPhone models, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 Plus, to the world, Apple also took the opportunity to announce its latest generation smartwatch offering, the Apple Watch Series 2. The newest Apple Watch devices generally look the same as the first generation models (now called the Apple Watch Series 1), but they do come with upgrades not visible to the eye.
It has been almost a year and a half since the first generation Apple Watch was released, and Apple did take its time in introducing new updates (except for some minor ones) for its one and only wearable device so far. But now that the Apple Watch Series 2 is finally here, iOS mobile device users should feel excited once again. In between the release of the original Apple Watch and the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 2, most of the updates consisted of new wristbands and enhancements to WatchOS, the operating software used in the wearable device. The newest version of WatchOS -- WatchOS 3 -- debuted at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference back in June earlier this year, and consumers will soon be able to experience the improvements through the Apple Watch Series 2, which is slated for release on September 13th, priced at $369.
About the changes in terms of features and functionalities, perhaps the most notable is the water proofing capabilities, which basically allows the Apple Watch Series 2 to withstand being submerged under water at a maximum depth of 50 meters. As explained by Jeff Williams, the chief operating officer of Apple, users can wear the second generation Apple Watch while swimming, surfing, or doing stuff in the rain.
The processor on the new Apple Watch has also been upgraded to a dual core chip that is up to 50 percent faster than the original Apple Watch. Furthermore, its new graphics processing unit offers double the graphics performance, and the display screen will be two times as bright. Oh, the latest model also comes with a built in GPS. The Apple Watch Series 2 also comes in aluminum, stainless steel, and a new white ceramic render, which is four times tougher than stainless steel.
Apple’s partnership with Nike should be welcome news to users who are fitness buffs. On the Apple Watch Nike Plus (priced at $369), users will be treated to a silicon strap, an aluminum case, and features specially designed for runners, e.g. a display that provides information on distance covered and pace.
