The number of live performances this year has grown immensely because of the pandemic. But these wouldn’t be possible without a stable and fast internet connection. Thankfully, this comes at a time when the major carriers have started to launch their 5G networks. These networks have made it much easier and enjoyable to enjoy live streams while staying at home.
Just recently, AT&T partnered with Ericsson to hold a virtual concert for NBC Songland artist, Axel Mansoor. To make things more interesting, they used AR (augmented reality) for the concert and used only 5G smartphones to capture the concert, which was attended by 10 guests.
Since this is an AR experience, the live concert gave the audience a choice on where they could place the “stage” in their home so they could walk around or even dance to the music. The attendees could also send emojis.
The whole concert was streamed using the extra bandwidth and low latency of AT&T’s 5G network. This was used with machine learning and edge computing to produce a truly AR experience from a live performance. In the past, the AR performances were either pre-recorded using motion capture suits and specialized volumetric streaming hardware. But this experience shows that live performances via a 5G-enabled smartphone are possible.
And even though the technology is still young, the whole concert proves that it is doable and helpful for each and every one, especially during a time like this health crisis. With this, it only goes to show that there are unlimited possibilities for this industry. But more than streaming concerts, this technology can pave the way for a virtual party or get-together with friends and family.
