In its huge annual event, Apple introduced three new iPhones on Tuesday, September 12, 2017. One of them is none other than the iPhone 8. In a nutshell, this new smartphone is an incremental update of last year’s iPhone 7. Oddly, the Cupertino, California tech company decided not to name it the iPhone 7s and instead jumped straight to 8. Regardless, the iPhone 8 is an exciting device that is sure to please plenty of longtime Apple fans and individuals looking to switch to iOS alike.
It should be mentioned that, in spite of the buzz surrounding it, the iPhone 8 is more of the redheaded stepchild in comparison to the 10th anniversary iPhone, the iPhone X. The hardware of the iPhone 8 is an improvement on the iPhone 7, while the internal components are slightly improved. Users who still call their iPhone 6 or 6s their daily driver would be pleased to get hold of the device because it is a worthwhile upgrade that comes at an affordable price. Although the updates to the iPhone 8 are generally modest in comparison to what can be found in the iPhone X, it will no doubt be a great seller. It’s worth exploring what’s new with this iPhone and what you can expect overall.
Alongside the iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X, the iPhone 8 is the most affordable of Apple’s new smartphones. There are two storage amounts available, the 64GB version being $699, while the 256GB model will sell for $849.
The pre-order date for the iPhone 8 is Friday, September 15, 2017 worldwide. The device is slated to hit store shelves on Friday, September 22, 2017.
One of the chief upgrades for the iPhone 8 is Apple’s brand new A11 Bionic chip. This new component is said to have been made using a new process involving 10nm. What that means is that the chip can run even more efficiently than the previous models, which, in turn, makes for better battery life and even more power so that you can take advantage of the new apps optimized for iOS 11. Users will be thrilled to get even greater battery life out of the iPhone 8, compared with all previous generations.
Although there probably won’t be a remarkable difference from last year’s iPhone 7, the device packs a bit more of a punch to accommodate the majority of apps. Things will generally run more smoothly for some time, which should make a definite difference to the user.
The A11 Bionic chip is impressively powerful, especially for a smartphone the size of the iPhone 8, which keeps the 4.7-inch screen size of all of its predecessors since the iPhone 6. Additionally, it is believed to be incorporated to push the experience of alternate reality to the user. Although that may seem like a bit of overkill for the iPhone 8 as it lacks a much-improved camera, battery life should see a marked improvement, which is a big win for all users.
In an odd move, this year’s iPhone 8 offers fewer color options than last year’s iPhone 7 and even 2015’s iPhone 6s. Instead of six or even four colors, the iPhone 8 is available in Space Gray, Silver and Gold. The Space Gray model more closely resembles last year’s Matte Black, which was introduced with the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus. The new Gold option looks more like Rose Gold, which was introduced with the iPhone 6s, except that it sports a white back. It also has a cool two-tone effect as a result.
Speaking of the back of the new iPhone 8, the devices have a glass back, which goes back to the build of 2010’s iPhone 4. However, design-wise, the 8 looks pretty much identical to the iPhone 6 through 7 models. As a result, you can spend what’s been expected on the iPhone 8 and not shell out $1,000, which is the starting price for the iPhone X.
The glass back on the smartphone also brings with it the ability to wirelessly charge the iPhone 8. Wireless charging is made possible with the Qi charging standard, which is already the go-to option for this particular technology. Of course, there is still the option of plugging in a cable the old fashioned way to charge. Wireless charging is a convenience that many have longed for, but it may not necessarily be the fastest.
In comparison to the last few iterations of the iPhone, the iPhone 8 feels slightly lighter when in the hand thanks to its glass back. Interestingly, it is also easier to tap on the Touch ID button without having to clumsily balance the phone in your hand.
Surprisingly, even though the iPhone 8 has the same size screen as the iPhone 6 through 7 models, 4.7 inches, the display has been given a considerable improvement. This time around, you get a Retina (Full) HD display, which makes everything crisper and sharper while colors pop. It delivers a considerably better web browsing and app using experience overall.
Of course, it cannot compare to the screen of the iPhone X, which boasts an OLED display, but you should certainly be pleased with the quality of the iPhone 8’s screen. True Tone technology, which was first introduced in the iPad Pro, is found here and makes colors richer and truer.
Although Apple decided to stick with the 12-megapixel camera that first debuted in the iPhone 6s, photo quality is excellent. Unlike the camera of the iPhone 8 Plus, there is only a single sensor, but the image quality is even better than what the iPhone 7 offered. No doubt, when you first snag yourself an iPhone 8, you will be snapping pictures left and right.
Overall, it’s a bit surprising that Apple didn’t name this new phone the “iPhone 7s” considering there aren’t many changes to be found. The major changes were saved for the anniversary edition iPhone X. Those that do appear in the iPhone 8 are ones to be expected, namely the faster A11 chip, but in general, the phone cannot be compared with the iPhone X.
At the same time, due to its incremental updates and reasonable price tag, the iPhone 8 is a good choice for individuals who are still using the iPhone 6s and earlier generation iPhones. They will still be able to enjoy a flagship iPhone experience at an affordable cost.
